The Thunder is a metal saxophone mouthpiece with a gold plated finish, built for players who need projection and a defined edge rather than a soft, diffuse sound. It is a lead and commercial piece.
Tip opening is the number in the model name and it is the choice that matters. A smaller tip is easier to control and takes a harder reed. A larger tip gives more volume and more flexibility and takes a softer reed. Players moving up the range usually go one size at a time.

How Do I Choose a Tip Opening?
Start from what you play now. If your current piece feels stuffy and you want more volume and bend, go one size larger and drop reed strength by roughly half a grade. If you are running out of control at the top, go smaller. Jumping two or three sizes usually costs more in control than it gains in volume.
Does a Metal Mouthpiece Sound Brighter Than Hard Rubber?
Usually, but the chamber and baffle do more of that work than the material. A metal piece can be made dark and a rubber piece can be made bright. What metal reliably gives is a thinner wall, so the tooth position and the feel in the mouth differ from rubber even at the same tip.
What Ligature Does This Take?
A metal saxophone ligature sized for a metal mouthpiece. A rubber-piece ligature will not close far enough. Call 844-687-4208 if you are unsure.
