Slate Digital built its reputation on modelling analogue hardware in software, and the Virtual Microphone System is what happened when that approach was extended into hardware. The premise is unusual and worth understanding before buying: rather than designing a microphone with an appealing character of its own, Slate designed one to be as neutral and uncoloured as possible, because a model can shape a neutral capture into something specific but cannot undo colour that is already in the recording. The ML-1 large diaphragm condenser is the front end of that system. Paired with the modelling software it covers a library of classic microphones that would otherwise represent a great deal of money and shelf space, which is the practical argument for the approach. What it does not reproduce is the physical circuit behaviour of the originals, so it is a genuinely different proposition rather than a substitute, and worth evaluating on those terms.
