Universal Audio 4-710d is a four-channel microphone preamplifier with dynamics and digital output, built on UA's Twin-Finity tone-blending design. Each channel blends continuously between a tube and a solid-state gain stage, and carries its own dynamics section, so four sources can be tracked with independent character and level control from one 2U chassis.

Tone-blending is the idea the 710 family is built on. Rather than choosing tube or solid state, each channel has both gain stages running and a single control that mixes between them continuously. At one extreme the signal is all tube with its harmonic character and softer transient handling; at the other it is clean solid state; anywhere in between is a genuine blend rather than a crossfade between two processed copies.
Four channels of that in one rack unit is what the 4-710d is for. A drum kit, a small band tracking live, or a session that needs four different microphone characters at once all become possible without four separate boxes and four different sounds.
Each channel also carries its own dynamics section, so level control happens before conversion rather than in the box afterward. The d in the model name denotes the digital output, which allows the unit to feed a digital input directly.
Universal Audio still hand-builds this line in California to the original circuit designs rather than licensing the name out. The company was founded in 1958 by M.T. "Bill" Putnam, who designed the 1176 and the 610, and was revived in 1999 by his sons with the original schematics and, in several cases, the original test gear.

What Is Tone Blending?
Each channel runs a tube gain stage and a solid-state gain stage at the same time, with one control mixing continuously between them. It is not a switch. At one end the character is tube, at the other it is clean solid state, and every position between is a real blend of the two circuits.

Studios tracking drums, small bands recording live, and anyone who needs four channels of characterful front end rather than four channels of neutral gain. The per-channel dynamics make it workable as a complete front end rather than a preamp that needs outboard behind it.
What Does the D in 4-710d Mean?
