Universal Audio 6176 is a vintage channel strip pairing the 610 tube microphone preamp with the 1176LN FET limiting amplifier in one 2U chassis. It gives the tube front end and the fastest peak limiter UA makes on a single signal path, with a DI input and switchable impedance on the preamp stage.

The 6176 is not a new design. It is UA's two best-known circuits placed in series in one box: the 610 tube preamp that Bill Putnam designed for his own consoles, feeding the 1176LN FET limiter. Those two pieces have been chained together in studios for decades, and the 6176 removes the patching.
The 610 stage brings tube gain with selectable input impedance, which changes how a microphone loads and therefore how it sounds, plus a DI input for instruments. The 1176 stage brings 20 microsecond attack, the four ratio buttons and the all-buttons behavior the unit is known for.
Because both stages have their own bypass, either can be used alone. That matters more than it sounds: a source can be tracked through the tube preamp clean and limited later, or run through the 1176 from a line source without the tube stage.
Universal Audio still hand-builds this line in California to the original circuit designs rather than licensing the name out. The company was founded in 1958 by M.T. "Bill" Putnam, who designed the 1176 and the 610, and was revived in 1999 by his sons with the original schematics and, in several cases, the original test gear.

What Is Actually Inside the 6176?
Two complete circuits in series. The 610 tube microphone preamp with selectable input impedance and a DI input, feeding the 1176LN FET limiting amplifier with its four ratio buttons and 20 microsecond attack. Each stage bypasses independently, so either can be used on its own.
Who Is the 6176 For?
Studios that want one channel of the best UA front end rather than several channels of something more ordinary. It is a tracking chain for lead vocals and bass in particular, and it removes the patching involved in chaining a separate 610 and 1176.
Why Does Selectable Input Impedance Matter?
A microphone's output changes with the load it sees. Dropping the input impedance alters the frequency response and transient behavior of a dynamic or ribbon microphone in particular, so the switch is a genuine tone control that works before any gain is applied.
Can I Use Just the Compressor?
Yes. Each stage has independent bypass, so the 1176 section can process a line source with the tube preamp out of the path, and the preamp can be used clean with the limiter bypassed.

The 6176 pairs the 610 preamp with the 1176 FET limiter. The LA-610 pairs the same preamp with Teletronix T4 optical compression and adds tube EQ. They are different dynamics circuits with different behavior.
