Allen & Heath WZ4 14:4:2 is a 14-input, 4-group analog console with 10 mic/line inputs on balanced XLR and TRS jack, 2 dual stereo channels, 6 aux sends, a 6x2 matrix and four sub groups with inserts. It runs as a front of house desk, as a monitor desk, or as both at once in Dual mode.

The three operating modes are the reason this desk exists. In FOH mode the four groups with inserts, 100 mm faders and XLR outputs route and pan to the LR mix for subgrouping, and the main mix carries inserts, separate left and right faders and XLR outputs. In Monitor mode the aux mixes route to the group and LR faders, inserts and XLR outputs, and the AFL and PFL system switches to the mono output to give the engineer a wedge feed. That makes it a six-mix monitor console with extra outputs from the group busses.
Dual mode is the one that gets used most in practice. Some auxes run as monitor mixes while some subgrouping continues on the main LR outputs, so one engineer covers front of house and a few monitor mixes from a single desk. For a venue that cannot staff two positions, that is the whole argument.
The MixWizard4 preamp was developed by analogue designer Mike Griffin and adapted from the design used in Allen & Heath's large-format analogue consoles. It delivers very low noise, minimal distortion, a wide and smooth gain law, and substantial headroom.
Every MixWizard4 carries six auxes, each with its own master level control and impedance-balanced TRS output. Auxes 1 and 2 are pre-fade for monitors, 3 and 4 switch pre or post-fade for monitors, effects or extra zone feeds, and 5 and 6 are post-fade for effects and aux-fed subs. The pre and post settings change via internal jumpers.
The QCC quick change connector system lets the connector panel move to suit a desktop, a rack or a flightcase, and the hard plastic side trims come off to reveal integral rack ears.

What Are the Three Operating Modes?
FOH mode routes the four groups to the LR mix for subgrouping, with inserts and XLR outputs on both. Monitor mode routes the aux mixes to the group and LR faders and outputs, and switches AFL and PFL to the mono output as an engineer's wedge feed, giving a six-mix monitor console. Dual mode runs some auxes as monitor mixes alongside subgrouping on the main outputs, so one person covers both roles.
