ZED Max is the four-bus end of the ZED range, built for larger live work where subgrouping and a matrix are not optional. Every model carries four sub groups, six aux sends split two pre-fade, two post-fade and two switchable, a 7x2 matrix, 4-band EQ with sweepable mids, XLR main outputs with insert points and 100 mm faders.
The preamp is where the ZED range earns its reputation. Allen & Heath's DuoPre design splits the gain into two stages, which keeps noise down and headroom high across the whole range of the control rather than only at the top of it. It is the same R&D team that builds the preamps on the company's flagship touring consoles.
MusiQ EQ was designed specifically for the ZED mixers. Rather than borrowing a generic curve, the analogue engineers set the target frequencies and the slope of each band around what actually needs correcting on instruments and voices, which is why it tends to sound right with less movement of the controls.

What Do Sub Groups and a Matrix Give Me?
Four sub groups let related channels ride on a single fader, so a whole drum kit or a vocal group moves together. The 7x2 matrix builds separate output mixes from the groups and mains, which is how delay speakers, fill speakers, a lobby feed and a broadcast mix get fed independently from the same desk.
Who Is the ZED-420 For?
Theaters, larger houses of worship, schools with a real auditorium, and production companies covering events where multiple output zones are the normal case rather than the exception.
How Are the Six Auxes Split?
Two pre-fade for monitors, two post-fade for effects and aux-fed subs, and two switchable pre or post depending on what the show needs. That covers monitors and effects at the same time without compromise.
How Is It Different From the ZED-24?
Both carry 16 mic/line channels. The ZED-420 adds 4 sub groups, a 7x2 matrix, six auxes instead of four, and 4-band EQ with sweepable mids instead of 3-band with one sweepable mid.

Why Allen & Heath?
