Allen & Heath ZED-6 is a compact 6-input analog mixer with 2 mic/line inputs on XLR and TRS jack sockets, 2 stereo inputs on TRS, and 2 high impedance instrument inputs for plugging a guitar in without a DI box. ZED Compact was built for musicians, singer-songwriters and small venues that want Allen & Heath preamps in something that fits on a table. The ZED-6 is the plain version: six inputs, no effects engine, and nothing on the surface that is not doing work.
The two Hi-Z instrument inputs matter more than the spec line suggests. A guitar plugs straight in, which removes a DI box from the bag and one more thing to fail at load-in. Two mic/line channels with 48 V phantom cover a vocal and an instrument mic, and the two stereo channels take playback or a keyboard.
The preamp is where the ZED range earns its reputation. Allen & Heath's DuoPre design splits the gain into two stages, which keeps noise down and headroom high across the whole range of the control rather than only at the top of it. It is the same R&D team that builds the preamps on the company's flagship touring consoles.
MusiQ EQ was designed specifically for the ZED mixers. Rather than borrowing a generic curve, the analogue engineers set the target frequencies and the slope of each band around what actually needs correcting on instruments and voices, which is why it tends to sound right with less movement of the controls.

How Many Things Can I Plug Into a ZED-6?
Two mic or line sources on combination XLR and TRS jacks, two stereo sources on TRS jacks, and two high impedance instruments straight into the guitar DI inputs. That covers a vocal mic, an instrument mic, a guitar and a backing track without any additional hardware.
Who Is the ZED-6 For?
Singer-songwriters, duos, small venues, houses of worship running a simple system, and anyone who needs Allen & Heath preamp quality at the smallest practical size. It is also common as a submixer feeding a larger console.
Do I Need a DI Box for Guitar?
No. The two Hi-Z inputs accept a guitar or bass directly, which is what those inputs exist for. That removes a DI box and a cable from the setup.
What Is the Difference Between ZED-6 and ZED-6FX?
The FX version adds an internal effects engine with tap tempo and 61 presets of reverb and delay, including multi-model combinations. Inputs, EQ, preamps and outputs are otherwise the same.
