Universal Audio Apollo Solo is a 2-in 4-out desktop Thunderbolt 3 audio interface with a single Unison mic preamp, 24-bit and 192 kHz conversion, and onboard DSP for Realtime UAD processing. It is bus powered over Thunderbolt 3, backwards compatible with earlier Thunderbolt devices, and includes the Realtime Analog Classics plug-in bundle.

Apollo is built around Unison, which is the part that separates it from a conventional interface. Unison gives the physical mic preamp bidirectional control, so a Neve, API, Manley or SSL emulation changes the impedance and gain staging of the analog front end rather than only processing the signal after conversion. The result behaves like the modeled preamp at the input, not like a plug-in placed after one.
Realtime UAD Processing is the second half. Onboard DSP runs UAD plug-ins at near-zero latency regardless of the DAW buffer size, so a vocalist monitors through an LA-2A and a Pultec while tracking, and the DSP load sits on the interface rather than the computer. The same plug-ins run in VST, Audio Units and AAX in any major DAW at mix time.
LUNA is included free. It is UA's own recording system, and it adds tape, console and summing emulations that run as extensions rather than as inserts, which is a different workflow from treating them as plug-ins on a channel.

How Much I/O Does Apollo Solo Have?
Two in and four out. One Unison mic preamp on a combination XLR and 1/4 in. input, a front panel Hi-Z instrument input, a stereo monitor pair and a headphone output. Conversion runs at 24-bit and 192 kHz.
Who Is Apollo Solo For?
Songwriters, guitarists and vocalists recording one source at a time who want the Unison front end and Realtime UAD processing without paying for channels they will not use. It is also common as a portable second interface alongside a rackmount Apollo.
What Is Unison and Why Does It Matter?

Why Universal Audio?
Universal Audio was founded in 1958 by M.T. "Bill" Putnam, the engineer who built the first recording console with integrated equalization and effects sends, and who designed the 1176 and the 610. The company was revived in 1999 by his sons and now does two things: it still hand-builds analog hardware in California, and it licenses and models the classics from Neve, API, Manley, SSL, Lexicon, Studer, Ampex and others rather than emulating them without authorization.

How is this different from the USB version?
The connection. This is the Thunderbolt 3 model and it is bus powered over Thunderbolt. The Apollo Solo USB is the Windows-focused USB version.
