Universal Audio Apollo Twin X DUO Gen 2 is a 10-in / 6-out desktop Thunderbolt 3 audio interface with 2 Unison preamps and DUO Core DSP for Realtime UAD processing. It ships with the UAD Analog Classics Pro plug-in bundle and the LUNA Recording System, and runs UAD plug-ins in VST, Audio Units and AAX in any major DAW.

Apollo is built around Unison, which is the part that separates it from a conventional interface. Unison gives the physical mic preamp bidirectional control, so a Neve, API, Manley or SSL emulation changes the impedance and gain staging of the analog front end rather than only processing the signal after conversion. The result behaves like the modeled preamp at the input, not like a plug-in placed after one.
Realtime UAD Processing is the second half. Onboard DSP runs UAD plug-ins at near-zero latency regardless of the DAW buffer size, so a vocalist monitors through an LA-2A and a Pultec while tracking, and the DSP load sits on the interface rather than the computer. The same plug-ins run in VST, Audio Units and AAX in any major DAW at mix time.
LUNA is included free. It is UA's own recording system, and it adds tape, console and summing emulations that run as extensions rather than as inserts, which is a different workflow from treating them as plug-ins on a channel.

How Much I/O Does Apollo Twin X Have?
Ten in and six out. Two combination XLR and 1/4 in. mic/line inputs with Unison preamps, a front panel Hi-Z instrument input, a stereo monitor pair, two line outputs, a headphone output, and optical ADAT plus S/PDIF digital input adding eight more channels at 44.1 and 48 kHz.
Who Is Apollo Twin X For?
Producers and songwriters working at a desk who want Unison preamps and Realtime UAD processing without a rack. It is the most common Apollo for a project studio, and the DUO and QUAD versions differ only in how many UAD plug-ins can run at once.
What Is the Difference Between DUO and QUAD?
DSP count. DUO carries two SHARC processors, QUAD carries four. The audio path, preamps, conversion and I/O are identical. QUAD lets more UAD plug-ins run simultaneously, which matters most when tracking through several instances at once or mixing large sessions on the interface.
What Is Unison and Why Does It Matter?
Unison gives the UAD plug-in bidirectional control over the physical mic preamp, so a Neve or API emulation changes the impedance and gain staging of the analog input stage itself. A conventional interface can only process the signal after it has been converted. That is why a Unison preamp responds to a microphone the way the modeled hardware does rather than only sounding like it.
What Plug-Ins Come With the UAD Analog Classics Pro Version?
Analog Classics Pro is the step up. It expands the channel strip and preamp section to 19 titles, adding API Preamp, API Vision Channel Strip, Avalon VT-737sp and more alongside the standard set, widens the guitar and bass section to 9 plug-ins including the Fender '55 Tweed, and adds four LUNA Extensions: the Ampex ATR-102 Master Tape Extension, API Summing Extension, API Vision Console Emulation and Studer A800 Multitrack.

Why Universal Audio?
Universal Audio was founded in 1958 by M.T. "Bill" Putnam, the engineer who built the first recording console with integrated equalization and effects sends, and who designed the 1176 and the 610.
