The AB24 is the definition of the Applause Standard: the guitar that hands you the genuine Ovation experience at the entry to the family. The Applause E-Acoustic Guitar AB24-5S, Black Satin is that guitar. This one wears the Black Satin finish.
The Roundback Difference
Instead of wooden back and sides, the AB24 is built on a mid-depth Lyrachord bowl, the molded composite shell Ovation developed from aerospace engineering in the 1960s. A wooden box loses energy through its seams and moves with every swing in humidity; the one-piece bowl does neither. It reflects the string energy forward, shrugs off the summer-to-winter changes that crack traditional flat-tops, and takes the knocks of rehearsal rooms and church vans without complaint.
Up top, a selected spruce soundboard is braced with scalloped, quartersawn X-bracing, the same approach found far up the price ladder. Scalloping removes wood where stiffness is not needed, letting the top move freely, and quartersawn braces resist warping over decades of string tension. The cutaway clears the way to the upper frets, and the mid-depth bowl keeps enough air behind the top for a full, present acoustic voice.
Sound and Electronics
Spruce over a reflective bowl produces the classic Ovation character: articulate, immediate, with a focused low end that stays defined in a band mix instead of blooming into mud. Plugged in, the Applause CE304T preamp gives you a three-band EQ and a built-in tuner right on the upper bout. Cut the mids for fingerstyle sparkle, lift the bass for solo work, tune silently between songs. It is a working musician's control set, not an afterthought.
Playability
The nato neck carries a 643mm scale and a 42.8mm nut, steel-string standard dimensions that feel instantly familiar, with an edged ovangkol fingerboard rolled for comfort. The bowl's curved back sits against your body without the sharp edge of a traditional dreadnought, which is a difference you notice in the third hour of playing, not the third minute.
