The Super Shallow Bowl
The AB28 is built on Ovation's flat super shallow Lyrachord bowl with a cutaway, the thinnest body in the Applause line. The molded composite shell resists humidity and impact the way no wooden box can, and at this depth the guitar hangs on a strap closer to an electric than a dreadnought. For players moving between electric and acoustic in the same set, the transition stops being a fight.
The selected spruce top rides on scalloped, quartersawn X-bracing, so the soundboard still moves freely despite the shallow air chamber behind it. A fitted ovangkol fingerboard, inlaid perloid rosette, and multi-part purfling finish it at a level of detail this tier rarely sees.
Sound and Electronics
A shallow bowl trades a little unplugged boom for two things stage players value more: comfort and feedback resistance. Less air inside means fewer runaway resonances when the monitors get loud. Through the CE304T active preamp with three-band EQ and onboard tuner, the AB28 is really designed to live plugged in, where the spruce top's clarity and the bowl's focus translate into a mix-ready signal.
Playability
The 643mm scale and 43mm nut on a nato neck feel like home to any steel-string or electric player, and the 10-inch fingerboard radius is friendlier to barre chords and bends than the flatter boards on many acoustics. Add the cutaway and the thin body, and this is the Applause built for long sets.
