Universal Audio Astra is a flagship modulation pedal carrying three complete effects: an end-to-end emulation of an iconic Japanese chorus and vibrato pedal, a full circuit capture of a legendary 1970s rackmount studio flanger and doubler, and a stem-to-stern model of the tube-driven optical tremolo from classic 1960s American amplifiers.

UAFX pedals come out of the same modeling work as UA's plug-ins. The company measures specific units rather than product categories, which is why its descriptions name a particular amplifier or a particular tape machine rather than a style. The dual-engine processing in these pedals is what allows that detail to run in a stompbox rather than on a computer.
The flagship UAFX pedals differ from the compact ones in how much is inside. Each carries three complete effect families rather than one, every family modeled from specific hardware, with preset storage, silent switching and a choice of true or buffered bypass.
The UAFX Control app handles what the four knobs cannot. Footswitch behavior, preset recall and archiving, additional downloadable speaker cabinets and microphones, and artist presets all live there. Current pedals support MIDI over USB along with Bluetooth and hardwired connections.

What Three Effects Does Astra Contain?
A bucket-brigade chorus and vibrato modeled end to end from an iconic Japanese pedal, a flanger and doubler taken as a full circuit capture of a 1970s rackmount studio unit, and a tube-driven optical tremolo modeled from classic 1960s American amplifiers. Who Is Astra For?
Players who want modulation to be a real part of the sound rather than an occasional effect, and anyone who would otherwise carry a chorus, a flanger and a tremolo separately. The rackmount flanger in particular is a studio effect rarely available in pedal form.
What Is Bucket-Brigade Modulation?
An analog delay technique where the signal is passed through a chain of capacitors rather than converted to digital. It introduces its own character and a limited bandwidth, and that imperfection is exactly what makes vintage chorus and vibrato sound the way they do.

Why Universal Audio?
Universal Audio was founded in 1958 by M.T. "Bill" Putnam, the engineer who built the first recording console with integrated equalization and effects sends, and who designed the 1176 and the 610. The company was revived in 1999 by his sons and now does two things: it still hand-builds analog hardware in California, and it licenses and models the classics from Neve, API, Manley, SSL, Lexicon, Studer, Ampex and others rather than emulating them without authorization.

Is this covered by warranty?

Does it need a special power supply?
UAFX pedals draw more current than a typical analog pedal. UA sells the PSU-GP1-WW supply for the UAFX line and we stock it. Call 844-687-4208 to add one.
Can I save my settings?
Yes. UAFX pedals store and recall presets, and the UAFX Control app handles archiving and further preset management.
Is the bypass true or buffered?
Selectable. True bypass takes the pedal out of the signal path entirely; buffered bypass preserves reverb and delay tails when the effect is switched off.
