DigiTech Whammy is the fifth generation of the treadle pitch-shift pedal that created the category in 1989. It carries 10 Whammy settings, 9 Harmony settings and 2 Detune settings, a Classic and Chords switch for single-note or polyphonic tracking, MIDI input for remote control, and true bypass. Conversion is 24-bit at a 44.1 kHz sample rate.
The pedal that invented an entire effect, still the reference for it.
The Whammy works through its treadle. Rocking forward increases the amount of pitch bend on the selected Harmony, Whammy or Detune setting, rocking back reduces it. The Selector knob chooses which of the 21 settings is active, and the effect switch takes it in and out. That interface has barely changed since 1989 because it did not need to.
What the fifth generation adds is the Classic and Chords switch. Classic runs the original algorithm, which tracks single notes and produces the stepped, glitching artifacts that are half the reason players want a Whammy in the first place. Chords runs the newer algorithm from the Whammy DT, which tracks full chords cleanly and holds together on strummed material.
MIDI input handles the rest. Incoming MIDI can select a Whammy or Drop Tune effect, set whether it is active or bypassed, and drive the treadle position through CC messages, which matters for anyone running a switching system or recalling settings between songs.

What Is the Difference Between Classic and Chords Mode?
Classic runs the original Whammy algorithm. It tracks one note at a time and keeps the tracking artifacts of the early units, which is the sound most people picture when they think of a Whammy. Chords runs the algorithm from the Whammy DT and tracks polyphonic material, so full chords bend cleanly rather than falling apart.

Lead players who want dive bombs and octave jumps under a foot, anyone chasing the sounds on records by Tom Morello, Jack White, Jonny Greenwood, David Gilmour or Matt Bellamy, and studio players who need pitch effects that respond in real time rather than being edited in afterwards.
What Can I Control Over MIDI?
The MIDI input accepts program changes to select a Whammy or Drop Tune effect and set its bypass state, and CC messages to drive the treadle position remotely. That lets a switcher recall a specific setting per song, or an external controller sweep the pitch without a foot on the pedal.
Does It Need a Special Power Supply?
It runs on a 9 V DC external adapter and draws under 265 mA, so it needs a high-current output. DigiTech's own PS0913DC-01 is the matching supply for the US. A pedalboard supply works as long as the output can deliver the current.

Why DigiTech?
DigiTech has built guitar effects since 1984 and invented the mass-market digital pitch shifter with the original Whammy in 1989.
