Overview

IK Multimedia iRig Mic is a handheld electret condenser microphone with a unidirectional cardioid pattern, 100 Hz to 15 kHz response at -3 dB and a three position sensitivity switch giving maximum sound pressure levels of 75 dB, 90 dB and 120 dB. It connects through the device headset jack and ships with a storage bag, a mic clamp and a 5/8 in. to 3/8 in. thread adapter.

One microphone that handles a quiet voice or a loud amplifier, switched on the body.

The three position sensitivity switch is what separates iRig Mic from a simple plug-in microphone. Low handles up to 120 dB SPL, which covers a guitar cabinet or a drum kit. Mid handles 90 dB for close vocals and instruments. High handles 75 dB for distant and quiet sources. Setting it correctly on the body means the signal arrives at a sensible level rather than clipped or buried.

The capsule is a cardioid electret condenser responding from 100 Hz to 15 kHz at -3 dB, with a built-in windscreen. Distortion is specified at 3 percent THD at 120 dB and 1 kHz. The body measures 225 x 45 x 45 mm and weighs 300 g.

It connects through the headset jack, so it works with iOS, most CTIA and AHJ compliant Android devices, and most Mac computers with no interface and no batteries. A zippered storage bag, a mic clamp and a 5/8 in. to 3/8 in. thread adapter are included, so it mounts on a standard stand.

What Does the Sensitivity Switch Do?

It sets how loud a source the microphone can handle before distorting. Low takes up to 120 dB SPL for amplifiers and drums, mid takes 90 dB for close vocals and acoustic instruments, high takes 75 dB for quiet and distant sources. Choosing the right setting is what keeps the recording clean.

Who Is iRig Mic For?

Mobile recording of live music, rehearsals, interviews and vocals where the source level varies. The stand adapter also makes it practical as a fixed microphone rather than only a handheld.

What Comes in the Box?

The iRig Mic microphone, a zippered protective storage bag, a mic clamp and a 5/8 in. to 3/8 in. thread adapter.
