IK Multimedia iRig Pads is a 16-pad MIDI groove production controller with velocity-sensitive pads and multicolor indicators showing velocity and incoming MIDI. It adds two MIDI knobs, two pushbuttons, a slider and a pushbutton rotary encoder, all programmable, plus an expression and sustain pedal input and 16 user-programmable scenes for instant recall. It is bus powered and measures 190 x 205 x 23 mm at 547 g.

The 16 scenes are what separate this from a generic pad controller. Every mapping, every knob assignment and every pad note can be stored and recalled instantly, so one controller covers a drum kit layout, a clip launcher layout and a mixer layout without reprogramming between songs.
Pads are velocity sensitive with multicolor indicators that show both playing velocity and incoming MIDI, so you can see what the software is sending back as well as what you are playing. That makes it usable as a feedback surface for clip launching and step sequencing rather than only as an input device.
Beyond the pads there are two knobs, two pushbuttons, a slider and a pushbutton rotary encoder, all programmable and all sending and receiving MIDI. An expression and sustain pedal input adds a foot control. It is bus powered, so there are no batteries and no adapter to carry.

What Are Scenes and Why Do They Matter?
A scene stores the whole control mapping: pad notes, knob assignments, slider and encoder destinations. Sixteen of them means you can switch between a drum layout, a clip launching layout and a mixer layout instantly rather than reprogramming or reaching for a laptop mid set.

It sends and receives standard MIDI, so it works with any DAW or app that accepts MIDI input. Mapping is done in the software or through the scene assignments.
Can I hear audio through it?
No. iRig Pads is a MIDI controller, not an audio interface. For monitoring through headphones on an iOS device, IK notes that a Lightning dock providing a headphone jack is required.
