IK Multimedia iRig Pre 2 is a battery powered XLR microphone preamp for phones, tablets and digital cameras, supplying +48 V phantom power with a 48 dB gain range, 50 Hz to 20 kHz frequency response and THD+N at -90 dBA. It connects through an attached 40 cm TRRS cable to an auto-sensing 3.5 mm output, includes a headphone output with direct monitoring, and runs about 20 hours on two AA batteries with phantom power off.

Phones and cameras have 3.5 mm inputs designed for a headset microphone, not for a professional XLR mic. iRig Pre 2 bridges that gap properly: a real preamp stage with 48 dB of gain, +48 V phantom power at up to 6 mA for condenser microphones, and an auto-sensing output that adapts to the device it is plugged into.
Direct monitoring through the headphone output is the part videographers care about. You hear what is being recorded rather than what the camera decides to play back, which is the only way to catch a bad connection or a dead battery before the take is gone.
Battery life is roughly 20 hours with phantom power off and roughly 7 hours with it on, from two AA alkaline cells. The unit measures 40 x 110 x 34 mm and weighs 75 g without batteries, and a velcro strip is included for mounting it to a camera rig or a strap.

Why Not Just Plug the Microphone Into the Phone?
A phone's 3.5 mm input expects headset microphone level and provides plug-in power at best, not +48 V phantom. A professional condenser will not work at all, and a dynamic microphone will be far too quiet. iRig Pre 2 supplies the phantom power and the 48 dB of gain those microphones need.
Who Is iRig Pre 2 For?
Video shooters using a shotgun or lavalier microphone with a phone or DSLR, field recordists, podcasters recording on location, and anyone who owns good microphones and wants to use them away from an interface.
Is iRig Pre 2 Good for Field Work?
That is its main use. It runs 48 V phantom power from its own battery rather than the host device, so a condenser microphone works on a phone or a DSLR with nothing else in the bag. Interviewers, documentary crews and podcasters are the core users.

Does It Work With Android and DSLR Cameras?
Yes. It works with iOS, Android devices compliant with the CTIA and AHJ wiring standard, and DSLR cameras with a 3.5 mm microphone input. The output is auto-sensing and adapts to what it is connected to.
