Overview

IK Multimedia iRig Pre HD is a 24-bit microphone preamp and digital audio interface with a balanced XLR input, +48 V phantom power, 40 dB of gain and sample rates to 96 kHz. Frequency response runs 20 Hz to 20 kHz within 1.5 dB with input noise at -105 dBA, and the 1/8 in. headphone output delivers 100 mW into 50 Ohms with a numbered level thumbwheel.

A studio microphone into a phone or a laptop, converted at 24 bits.

iRig Pre 2 sends analog audio into the device's own converter. iRig Pre HD does the conversion itself, at 24-bit and up to 96 kHz, and delivers digital audio over the device connector. That removes the phone's headset input from the signal path entirely, which is where most of the noise and the level ceiling come from.

The microphone stage is a balanced XLR input at 2 kOhm with 40 dB of gain and +48 V phantom power for condensers. Input noise is specified at -97 dB RMS and -105 dBA, which is quiet enough for spoken word and acoustic sources without hiss becoming the loudest thing in the recording.

Power comes over USB when connected to a computer. Two AA batteries, included, are needed only to supply the +48 V phantom rail. Cables for Lightning, USB-A and USB-C all ship in the box, along with a velcro strip.

How Is This Different From iRig Pre 2?

iRig Pre 2 is an analog preamp that feeds the device's 3.5 mm input, so the phone or camera does the conversion. iRig Pre HD converts to 24-bit digital itself at up to 96 kHz and sends digital audio over the device connector, bypassing the headset input completely. The result is a cleaner, higher resolution recording.

Who Is iRig Pre HD For?

Podcasters, journalists, voiceover artists and musicians recording a single microphone into an iPhone, iPad, Mac or PC and wanting studio quality rather than mobile quality. It suits anyone who already owns a good microphone and needs a proper front end for it.

Is iRig Pre HD Good for Field Work?

Yes. It carries its own 24-bit 96 kHz conversion and its own phantom power supply, so a studio condenser records into a phone or laptop with no interface and no mains power in the chain. It fits a bag pocket and it records properly on location.

What Comes in the Box?

The iRig Pre HD, a Lightning to micro USB cable, a USB-A to micro USB cable, a USB-C to micro USB cable, two 1.5 V AA batteries and a velcro strip.

Do I Need the Batteries?

Only for +48 V phantom power. Connected to a computer over USB the unit is bus powered, but the phantom rail still comes from the batteries.

Connections

Microphone input Balanced XLR, pin 2 hot
