Overview

IK Multimedia iRig Pro I/O is a portable audio and MIDI interface combining a balanced XLR microphone input with +48 V phantom power and 40 dB of gain, a 1 MOhm Hi-Z instrument input with 27 dB of gain, MIDI in and out on 2.5 mm jacks, and a 1/8 in. headphone output delivering 100 mW into 50 Ohms. Conversion is 24-bit, and frequency response is 20 Hz to 20 kHz within 1.5 dB on both inputs.

Microphone, instrument and MIDI in one box small enough to leave in the bag.

Most portable interfaces make you choose between a microphone input and an instrument input. iRig Pro I/O has both, properly implemented. The microphone input is balanced XLR at 3.2 kOhm with real +48 V phantom power. The instrument input is unbalanced Hi-Z at 1 MOhm, which is high enough to load a passive pickup without dulling it.

MIDI in and out on 2.5 mm jacks is the piece that turns it into a full mobile rig. A controller keyboard, a drum pad or an external synth all connect, which means the same box handles a songwriting session and a tracking session.

Input noise sits at -103 dBA on both inputs, and the headphone output has a numbered level thumbwheel so a setting can be repeated. A DC barrel input supplies power and charges the connected device, and the device connector is mini-DIN so cables can be swapped for different hosts.

How Much I/O Does iRig Pro I/O Have?

One balanced XLR microphone input with phantom power, one Hi-Z instrument input, MIDI in and out, and a headphone output. One audio source at a time, plus MIDI, which covers songwriting, tracking and mobile podcasting.

Who Is iRig Pro I/O For?

Musicians working from an iPhone, iPad or laptop who need to record both microphones and instruments and drive MIDI gear. Also a strong choice for mobile podcasting and interview work, since the XLR input takes any professional microphone.

Is iRig Pro I/O Good for Travel?

It is built for it. Microphone input, instrument input and full MIDI in and out in one palm sized box, phantom power from its own battery, and no mains supply required. It stays in the laptop bag and works in any room.

Can It Power a Condenser Microphone?

Yes. It supplies +48 V phantom power at plus or minus 4 V. When running from a phone or tablet, connect the DC input for phantom operation so the device battery is not carrying the load.

What Does the DC Input Do?

It powers the interface and charges the connected device at the same time. On long sessions that is the difference between finishing the take and watching a phone battery die.

Connections

Microphone input Balanced female XLR, pin 2 hot
Instrument input 1/4 in. TS, Hi-Z, 1 MOhm

Power DC barrel input, also charges the connected device
