The KickPort is a tuned port that drops into the hole in your bass drum resonant head. It works like the port on a bass reflex speaker cabinet, so it lifts the low frequencies, adds damping right at the resonant head, and focuses the air on its way out for more punch. That damping is usually enough to let you pull most or all of the pillows and blankets out of the drum and get the shell resonating again.
