Universal Audio LA-610 Mk II is a tube recording channel combining the all-tube 610 microphone preamp derived from Bill Putnam's 610 modular console with authentic Teletronix T4 opto-compression circuitry and high and low frequency shelving tube EQ. The Mk II adds true compressor bypass, larger metering, increased output and an auto-switching power supply.

The LA-610 is the other way to combine UA's two signature circuits. Where the 6176 pairs the 610 preamp with the FET-based 1176, the LA-610 pairs it with the T4 optical cell from the LA-2A. That produces a slower, program-dependent compression that levels rather than catches, which suits vocals and bass differently from the way an 1176 does.
Between the two sits a tube EQ with high and low frequency shelving. It is deliberately simple, two bands of broad shaping rather than a corrective equalizer, and because it is tube-based the boost adds harmonic content along with the level.
The preamp stage carries gain and level controls separately, variable impedance switching that changes how a microphone loads, and an instrument DI for recording tone colour directly. Records by Coldplay, The Beach Boys and Van Halen were made through the 610 preamp design.
Mk II specific features are true compressor bypass, larger metering, increased output and an auto-switching power supply. Universal Audio still hand-builds this line in California to the original circuit designs rather than licensing the name out. The company was founded in 1958 by M.T. "Bill" Putnam, who designed the 1176 and the 610, and was revived in 1999 by his sons with the original schematics and, in several cases, the original test gear.

How Is the LA-610 Different From the 6176?
The dynamics section. The LA-610 uses Teletronix T4 optical compression, which is slow and program-dependent and levels a performance. The 6176 uses the 1176 FET limiter, which is fast enough to catch transients. The LA-610 also carries a tube shelving EQ that the 6176 does not.
Who Is the LA-610 Mk II For?
Studios tracking vocals and bass who want the whole chain in tubes: preamp, EQ and compression. It is a committing device, in that what it does is recorded rather than added later, which is how most people who own one prefer to work.
What Does Variable Impedance Switching Do?
It changes the load the microphone sees. A dynamic or ribbon microphone responds to that load with a different frequency response and transient character, so it is a genuine tone control operating before any gain is applied. Condensers are less affected but not immune.
What Changed in the Mk II?
True compressor bypass, larger metering, increased output and an auto-switching power supply. The core circuits, the 610 preamp and the T4 optical compression, carry over.
