Ambassador SMT Ebony Bass is a pre-muffled bass drumhead using Sub Muffl Technology, built from a single ply of 10-mil Ebony film with an externally mounted dampening profile holding free-floating acoustic foam. The muffling sits outside the head rather than inside the drum, so the shell keeps its full voice while the attack and low end increase.

The Ambassador SMT Ebony bass drumhead is a pre-muffled design featuring Sub Muffl Technology. What Is Sub Muffl Technology?
An externally mounted dampening profile carrying free-floating acoustic foam, fitted to the outside of the head rather than damping material sitting inside the drum. The head and shell retain their full sound characteristics while gaining attack and low end.
Do I Still Need a Pillow in the Drum?
That is the point of the design. SMT provides the control that internal muffling normally supplies, without filling the shell and killing its resonance. Most players run these with little or no additional internal damping.
What Sizes Are Available?
Remo produces the SMT Ebony bass head from 16 through 24 inches. Measure the shell diameter rather than the old head.
Why Remo
Remo has made drumheads in the United States since 1957, when Remo Belli replaced calfskin with Mylar and ended the problem that had defined drumming until then: a head that changed pitch with the weather. Every major head design since has come out of that company, and the Ambassador remains the most widely used drumhead in the world.
