Because the dot is on the underside, the stick meets bare coated film, so the feel and brush response stay intact while the head lasts far longer.

Constructed with 1-ply of 12-mil coated film and a 5-mil Bottom Black Dot, Controlled Sound X Coated Bottome Black Dot drumheads provide heavy-duty drumhead characteristics. The drumhead's outer area offers enhanced tone and sensitivity while the center dot adds durability and overtone control.

Why Put the Dot on the Bottom?
So the playing surface stays bare coated film. The feel, the brush response and the sensitivity are unchanged, while the underside dot still reinforces the impact area and controls overtones.
How Durable Is 12-Mil Film?
Considerably more than the 10-mil used on standard single-ply heads. Combined with the underside dot, Remo positions this as a heavy-duty snare head for players who break heads regularly.
Can I Use Brushes on It?
Yes. The top surface is coated film, so brush response is normal.
Why Remo
Remo has made drumheads in the United States since 1957, when Remo Belli replaced calfskin with Mylar and ended the problem that had defined drumming until then: a head that changed pitch with the weather.
