Emperor SMT Ebony Bass is a two-ply pre-muffled bass drumhead, combining 7.5-mil Ebony and 5-mil clear film with the external Sub Muffl dampening profile and free-floating acoustic foam. The extra ply adds weight and durability over the Ambassador SMT while keeping the same external muffling approach.
The two-ply version, for the drum that gets hit like it owes money.

It is constructed with 2-plies of 7.5-mil Ebony and 5-mil Clear film, and an externally mounted dampening profile with free-floating acoustic foam. It enables the head and drum shell to maintain full sound characteristics with additional attack and low-end frequencies. SMT technology allows a broad tonal spectrum of tuning ranges with controlled high and mid frequencies coupled with deep, powerful low tones. It is a new industry standard and one of the market's most musical and versatile pre-muffled bass drumheads. Ideal for live and recording applications. Available in sizes 16 through 24 inches. How Does This Differ From the Ambassador SMT Bass Head?
The Ambassador SMT is a single ply of 10-mil Ebony. The Emperor SMT is two plies, 7.5-mil Ebony over 5-mil clear. More material means more durability, a slightly shorter decay and more weight in the low end.
What Does the External Dampening Profile Do?
It carries free-floating acoustic foam on the outside of the head, controlling high and mid frequencies while leaving deep low tones intact. Because it is external, the drum shell is not filled with muffling and keeps its full character.
Is It Suitable for Recording?
Remo positions the SMT range for both live and recording work. The controlled highs and mids with intact low end is exactly what a close bass drum mic wants.
Why Remo
Remo has made drumheads in the United States since 1957, when Remo Belli replaced calfskin with Mylar and ended the problem that had defined drumming until then: a head that changed pitch with the weather. Every major head design since has come out of that company, and the Ambassador remains the most widely used drumhead in the world. Remo also builds world percussion, marching heads and the Acousticon shells used across its drum circle range.
