Overview

R-122 MKII is an active ribbon microphone, the phantom-powered version of the R-121 that made Royer's name. Active electronics give it far higher output and a consistent load, so it works properly on any preamp rather than needing a specialist one.

The R-121 voice, without needing a preamp with sixty clean decibels.

In 2022, we introduced the R-11, the world's first phantom powered, active ribbon(TM) microphone. It was a revolutionary development in ribbon mics, combining impedance matching circuitry with condenser-like output levels that allowed the R-122 to be used on even the quietest sound sources. It also allowed the mic to be paired to virtually any preamplifier. The R-122 MKII takes the R-122 to a whole new level, delivering unprecedented flexibility for ribbons via the addition of a switchable -15 dB pad and a switchable bass-cut filter. The switches are completely cut out of the circuit when disengaged so when both are off, the microphone is for all purposes an original R-22. The switches are located on the back of the microphone and recessed to prevent accidental activation. Features: · Phantom powered circuitry provides high output and impedance matching · -15 dB pad before the mic's electronics gives more headroom when activated · Bass cut filter reduces proximity effect and bass below 100 Hz when activated · High SPL Capabilities · No distortion up to maximum SPL rating · Extremely low residual noise · Ribbon element is not affected by heat or humidity · Absence of high frequency phase distortion · Equal sensitivity from front or back of element · Consistent frequency response regardless of distance · Rear side of mic records slightly brighter when three feet or closer to sound source

What Does Active Mean on a Ribbon?

The microphone carries its own powered electronics, so output is much higher than a passive ribbon and the ribbon sees a consistent load regardless of what preamp it feeds. It requires 48V phantom power to operate.

R-121 or R-122 MKII?

Same fundamental ribbon design. The R-121 is passive and needs a high-gain, clean preamp or a mic activator. The R-122 MKII is active, so it drives any preamp properly and is far less fussy about what it is plugged into.

Can It Take a Loud Source?

Yes, and that is a large part of why Royer exists. The offset ribbon design handles the SPL in front of a driven guitar cabinet, which would destroy a vintage ribbon.

Why Royer Labs

Royer Labs has built ribbon microphones in Burbank since 1998, and the R-121 changed the category by making a ribbon that could take real level in front of a guitar cabinet without tearing. Every ribbon is assembled by hand, and the company's offset-ribbon design is the reason a Royer handles loud sources that would destroy a vintage ribbon.
