A saxophone strap holds the full weight of the instrument on the back of the neck for hours at a time. Leather spreads that load better than a narrow synthetic webbing and softens with use rather than staying rigid.
The adjustable slide sets playing height, which matters more than most players realise. The mouthpiece should come to the player rather than the player reaching down to it, and a strap set correctly fixes embouchure and posture problems that get blamed on technique.

How Should a Saxophone Strap Be Adjusted?
Sit or stand in playing position, hook the horn on, and set the length so the mouthpiece arrives at your mouth without you tilting your head down or stretching up. Then leave it. Most posture and embouchure problems in young players come from a strap set too long.
Does a Leather Strap Need Any Care?
Keep it dry and out of a hot car. Leather stiffens if it gets soaked and then dries fast. Otherwise it softens with use and needs nothing.
