A double French horn carries both an F horn and a Bb horn in one instrument, with a thumb valve to switch between them. That is what makes the upper register secure and the lower register full, and it is why a single horn is a false economy for anyone past the first year.

What Is the Difference Between a Single and a Double Horn?

A single horn is pitched in F or in Bb only. A double horn has both sets of tubing and a thumb valve to switch between them. The F side gives the traditional horn colour in the low and middle register, the Bb side makes the upper register far more secure. Almost all horn repertoire assumes a double.

When Should a Student Move to a Double Horn?

Usually in the second or third year, once parts start going above the staff. A single F horn makes high writing a gamble, and a player who spends a year missing notes on a single horn learns to be tentative.
