TXI-L Large Caxixi is a large caxixi, a closed basket shaker woven from rattan over a flat hard base, filled with seeds and fitted with a loop handle. Shaking it forward drives the seeds against the hard base for a sharp, bright accent. Shaking it back drives them into the woven sides for a softer, drier sound. Two distinct voices come out of one instrument depending on which way you throw your wrist.

The caxixi comes from West Africa and travelled to Brazil, where it became inseparable from the berimbau in capoeira. The player holds it in the same hand as the berimbau stick and works it against the bow. Outside capoeira it has spread widely into Latin percussion, worship percussion and studio work, because it does something a straight tube shaker cannot.
The reason is the construction. The base is a flat hard disc and the walls are open weave. When the seeds strike the base they produce a hard, articulate crack. When they strike the woven sides they produce a diffuse rustle. Directional playing gives the instrument its own accent pattern rather than a uniform rattle. This is the large model, which holds more fill and produces a bigger, louder sound than the small size, better suited to live playing over a percussion section.
