Trombone slides are set up one of two ways. Cream gives a slower, more cushioned feel that lasts longer between applications. Light oil gives a faster, more immediate slide that needs topping up more often. Neither is wrong, and players are usually firm about which they want.
Light oil suits a clean, well-fitting slide. On a slide with dents or wear, cream covers the problem better. Either way the slide needs cleaning before anything goes on it, because oil over grit is just grinding paste.

Should I Use Slide Oil or Slide Cream?
Oil gives a faster slide and needs reapplying more often, sometimes every session. Cream gives a slower, more cushioned action and lasts longer. Players who move fast tend to prefer oil. Players with a worn or slightly dented slide usually do better with cream.
How Do I Apply Slide Oil Correctly?
Clean the inner slide with a cloth and a cleaning rod first. Put a few drops on each inner slide tube, work the slide to spread it, then spray the slide with water. The water is what actually makes the slide move, and the oil is what stops it drying out.
