A flugelhorn lives or dies on the low and middle register, and that is where the heat-treated gold brass bell and the ML bore do their work. The third piston slide trigger is not decoration on this horn. Flugelhorns run sharp in the lower register and the trigger is how you fix it while playing rather than between phrases.

Why Does a Flugelhorn Need a Third Slide Trigger?

Flugelhorns go sharp on low D and C sharp. A third piston slide trigger lets you push the slide out with the ring finger while the note is sounding, so the pitch is corrected in real time. Without it you are lipping down and losing tone to do it.

What Does a Gold Brass Bell Change?

Gold brass carries more copper than yellow brass. It is warmer and darker, with a slower attack, which is exactly what a flugelhorn is for. Heat treating the bell settles the metal and gives a more even response across the range.

What Mouthpiece Does This Take?

It has a small taper American shank receiver, so it takes a standard American shank flugelhorn mouthpiece. A trumpet mouthpiece will not seat correctly and will wreck the intonation.
