Volt 2 is a next generation mobile USB audio interface with onboard Tone Shaping Preamps and a Smart Display, giving music creators the sound of a pro studio with easy, hands-on control.

Built by the same team behind the Apollo interfaces, Volt 2 makes recording effortless. Get up and running on Mac, Windows, iPad or iPhone in minutes. Set vocal, guitar and stereo instrument levels perfectly with Auto-Gain. And when it is time to mix, you get an award winning suite of UAD plug-ins and the LUNA digital audio workstation.

Nothing is worse than a great take wrecked by digital distortion. Auto-Gain sets your recording levels in seconds and Clip Protection catches unexpected peaks, so you can watch the performance instead of the meters.

Who Is Volt 2 For?

Volt 2 is the sweet spot of the Gen 2 range. It suits singer songwriters and bedroom producers who record two sources at once, a vocal and a guitar, a stereo pedalboard, or two people talking. The Smart Display and Auto-Gain remove most of the setup work. Step up to Volt 4 Gen 2 if you need MIDI, ADAT or extra line I/O.

What Do the Tone Shaping Preamps Sound Like?

Every Volt preamp has a TONE button. Off is a clean preamp with 60 dB of transparent gain. Three further voicings colour the signal on the way in, drawn from the tube, solid state and British Class-A preamps in Universal Audio's own catalog, so the character lands on the recording rather than waiting for a plug-in.

Warmth. US tube voicing. Thick, dark and warm.

How Do Auto-Gain and Clip Protection Work?

Two assistive features handle the part of recording nobody enjoys. Auto-Gain listens to the source and sets the preamp for you. Clip Protection sits underneath and catches peaks you did not plan for. The Smart Display shows what is happening while you play, rather than after.

Auto-Gain. Listens to the source and sets preamp gain for you.

Which Volt Is Right for You?

Six models share the same converters, the same 60 dB preamps and the same software. They differ in how many sources you record at once, whether the preamps also compress, and what you can plug into the back.

The Universal Audio Volt Gen 2 and Volt Max range, six USB audio interfaces
The full range. Volt 1, Volt 2 and Volt 4 are the bus powered horizontal units. Volt 2 Max, Volt 4 Max and Volt 4P Max are the desktop units, which add MAX compression, a talkback microphone and a second headphone output.

Why Universal Audio

Universal Audio has been building recording equipment since 1958, when Bill Putnam Sr. designed the 610 console and the 1176 limiter that are still the reference for the sound of a record. The modern company builds the Apollo interfaces, UAD plug-ins and the LUNA digital audio workstation. Volt takes the preamp voicings and dynamics algorithms from that catalog and puts them in a bus powered box that fits beside a laptop.
