Universal Audio Volt 4 Gen 2 is a 12-in / 6-out USB audio interface with 32-bit / 192 kHz conversion, two Tone Shaping Preamps, two front-panel Hi-Z instrument inputs, additional line I/O, ADAT or S/PDIF optical input for eight more channels, MIDI In and Out, a full colour Smart Display and Assistive Auto-Gain with Clip Protection. It is USB bus powered and class compliant for Mac, Windows, iPad and iPhone.
The top of the horizontal Gen 2 range, with the connections a growing setup runs out of first.
Volt 4 is a next generation mobile USB audio interface with onboard Tone Shaping Preamps, a Smart Display and expanded inputs, giving music creators the sound of a pro studio with easy, hands-on control.
Built by the same team behind the Apollo interfaces, Volt 4 makes recording effortless. Set vocal, guitar and stereo instrument levels perfectly with Auto-Gain. Connect MIDI keyboards and drum machines, and expand the studio over ADAT. When it is time to mix, you get an award winning suite of UAD plug-ins and the LUNA digital audio workstation.
Bigger ideas need more connections. Volt 4 gives you studio grade mic / line and Hi-Z instrument inputs, adds MIDI for controllers and synths, and carries an onboard USB hub so a controller can draw power from the interface instead of the laptop.

Who Is Volt 4 For?
Volt 4 is for the hobbyist whose setup has outgrown two inputs. If you have synths, a drum machine, an outboard preamp or a MIDI controller sitting on the desk, this is the Gen 2 model with somewhere to plug them in. The ADAT input means you can add eight more channels later without replacing the interface. If you want onboard compression while tracking, look at the Volt Max models.
What Do the Tone Shaping Preamps Sound Like?
Every Volt preamp has a TONE button. Off is a clean preamp with 60 dB of transparent gain. Three further voicings colour the signal on the way in, drawn from the tube, solid state and British Class-A preamps in Universal Audio's own catalog, so the character lands on the recording rather than waiting for a plug-in.

US tube voicing. Thick, dark and warm.

US solid-state voicing. Mid-focused and tight.

British Class-A voicing. Balanced, with sparkle.

How Do Auto-Gain and Clip Protection Work?
Two assistive features handle the part of recording nobody enjoys. Auto-Gain listens to the source and sets the preamp for you. Clip Protection sits underneath and catches peaks you did not plan for. The Smart Display shows what is happening while you play, rather than after.

Listens to the source and sets preamp gain for you.

Catches unexpected peaks so a loud moment does not ruin the take.

Which Volt Is Right for You?
Six models share the same converters, the same 60 dB preamps and the same software. They differ in how many sources you record at once, whether the preamps also compress, and what you can plug into the back.

Why Universal Audio
Universal Audio has been building recording equipment since 1958, when Bill Putnam Sr. designed the 610 console and the 1176 limiter that are still the reference for the sound of a record. The modern company builds the Apollo interfaces, UAD plug-ins and the LUNA digital audio workstation. Volt takes the preamp voicings and dynamics algorithms from that catalog and puts them in a bus powered box that fits beside a laptop.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much I/O does Volt 4 Gen 2 really have?
Twelve inputs and six outputs at once. That is two mic / line channels, two more line inputs, eight channels of ADAT optical input, a stereo monitor pair, line outputs 3 and 4, and a stereo headphone output.
Can I use the ADAT port as an output?
No. The optical port on Volt 4 Gen 2 is an input only, switchable between ADAT and S/PDIF. Use it with an external eight channel preamp or a Volt 876 in standalone mode.
Does Volt 4 Gen 2 need a power supply?
No. Volt 4 is USB bus powered from your computer. There is a separate USB-C external power input requiring 5VDC at 1A minimum if a device cannot supply enough bus power, and a rear panel power switch.
