When Should I Use a Passive DI?
With active pickups, keyboards, drum machines and any source that already has a strong buffered output. Those sources do not need the impedance help an active DI provides, and a passive box has fewer things to go wrong.
Does a Passive DI Need Power?
No. The transformer does the work, so there is no phantom power requirement and nothing to fail on a dark stage.
What Does the Transformer Do?
It balances the signal and isolates the instrument from the desk electrically, which is what removes hum and ground loop noise between two pieces of gear on different circuits.
Why Warm Audio
Warm Audio builds recreations of the classic studio hardware most engineers will never get to own, at a fraction of what the originals cost. The company sources premium components, CineMag and custom transformers, Fairchild-grade capacitors, NOS tubes where the design calls for them, and puts them into circuits copied closely from the originals rather than approximated. It has grown from microphones and preamps into compressors, EQs, direct boxes, guitar pedals and cable.
